Art deco makes rooms feel taller and more deliberate. The style's strong verticals, fans and sunbursts pull the eye upwards, which is a genuine gift in rooms with ordinary ceiling heights, and its symmetry lends even a casual space a sense of intention. The mood shifts too: deco reads dressed-up, evening rather than morning, and a room wearing it will always feel a degree more formal than it did before.

The classic palettes — black with gold, deep teal, burgundy, blush with brass — are part of the effect. Gold detail against a dark ground is what gives deco its glamour, and it needs a little restraint around it to shine; in a busy, colourful room the geometry turns to noise. If your space already glitters, choose a quieter two-colour deco print rather than adding more gold.

Pair it with the materials the style grew up beside: velvet, walnut, marble, smoked glass and anything brass. Modern rooms take deco well precisely because the contrast flatters both sides — one strong geometric print can make a plain grey sofa look curated. What it dislikes is rustic company; pine and wicker fight it.

Symmetry is the placement rule. Deco pieces love being centred — over a fireplace, a bed, a console table — and matched pairs flanking a mirror or window play directly to the style's strengths. Hanging one off-centre in a casual cluster undoes exactly the discipline you bought it for.

A caveat worth heeding: a little deco goes a long way. One commanding piece in a room reads as taste; three begin to read as a themed bar. Choose the wall you most want to dignify, hang your best candidate there, and stop.
