The first question most buyers ask is whether a piece can live in a shared room rather than being exiled to a bedroom or an office. It usually can, and the deciding factor is treatment rather than subject. Cel-style work with heavy outlines and flat blocks of colour announces itself; painterly background art — a quiet street at dusk, a train window, a room with light coming in — behaves like any other illustration and passes without comment in a hallway or a lounge.
Line weight repays a close look. Flat colour and clean line scale up well and stay crisp at a distance, which is why this style holds a large wall better than fussier illustration does. The flip side is that any softness in the edges shows immediately, so zoom in on the outlines and check they are sharp rather than slightly furred.
Colour is the third consideration and the most likely to trip you up. A lot of this work leans hard into saturated sunset pinks and electric blues, which is glorious on a screen and dominant on a wall. If the room is otherwise calm, one saturated piece is plenty; a second makes the room feel like a lit display case.
Grouping often beats a single large piece, because the style comes from a sequential medium and reads naturally in a set. Three related images in a row, evenly spaced on a shared baseline, look considered. The same three scattered at different heights look like a collection that grew by accident, which is fine in a study and less fine in a living room.
Hang one where you will see it in the evening. Much of this artwork is lit by artificial light within the picture itself — street lamps, screens, neon — and it comes alive under warm indoor lighting in a way it never quite manages in flat daylight.
