The commonest mistake with this subject is buying the theme and forgetting the craft. Two pieces can both show a woman in profile with a headwrap, and one will hold a wall for years while the other looks tired by spring. What separates them is drawing and contrast, not subject matter. Look at the edges of the shapes, the confidence of the line, whether the composition would still work if it were reduced to a silhouette. That is the part you live with daily.
Skin tones are where weak work exposes itself. Strong pieces treat brown skin as a colour with a full range in it: warm highlights, cool shadow, reflected light along a jaw. Weak ones use one flat tone and simply darken the edges, which reads as a smudge from across a room. If an image already looks slightly muddy on a bright screen, assume it will look muddier under a warm bulb at home.
Faces need size. A portrait works when the eyes sit near your own eye level and the head is large enough to read clearly from where you actually sit, which for most sitting rooms means going one step larger than instinct suggests. Graphic, poster-style work built from big flat shapes survives smaller formats. Detailed painterly portraits do not.
Grouping is worth planning before you buy. Portraits fight one another when hung as a row of faces all staring out at the same angle. Mix a portrait with something abstract, a pattern, or a quieter figure turned away, and the wall settles immediately. Let one palette run through the set rather than one subject.
Before committing, run the squint test. Stand back, half close your eyes and see what survives. If you still read a clear shape, a light side and a dark side, the piece will work at a distance. If it dissolves into an even grey, the contrast is too low, and no amount of good lighting will rescue it.
