Message-led prints are difficult neighbours. Hang one beside a landscape and the landscape starts to look like wallpaper; hang two of them side by side and they argue over who gets read first.

The work that sits happily alongside advocacy art is quiet work: abstract blocks of colour, a plain botanical study, black and white photography with no text in it at all. Give the slogan the only voice in the group and the wall settles down.

Typography does most of the labour in this category, which makes letterforms worth a close look before you commit. Heavy condensed capitals read as protest; a looser hand-lettered line reads as personal conviction. Neither is better, but they suit different rooms, and mixing the two in one arrangement tends to look indecisive rather than layered.

Placement matters more here than with decorative subjects, because a message you have to explain to guests has already lost its force. A hallway, a home office, a landing at the top of the stairs — somewhere people meet it head on rather than glimpse it sideways from a sofa. Kitchens work too, oddly, since people stand still in them.

Colour is where the weak examples give themselves away. A washed-out pastel treatment of a firm sentence sends two signals at once and neither lands. Look for a limited palette with real contrast between the lettering and the ground, then check the image at thumbnail size: if the words dissolve when small, they will dissolve across a room as well.

Before you buy, read the line out loud. Wall art with words on it is something you will read hundreds of times, silently, for years. If the phrasing makes you wince on the third reading, it is not the piece for your home, however much you agree with the sentiment behind it.
