A strong abstract has a structure you can feel even when you cannot name it; a weak one is texture all the way through. Cover half of the image with your hand: good work still composes on either side, with weight balanced deliberately and your eye led somewhere. Weak work looks the same wherever you crop it, like a swatch of wallpaper — and wallpaper is what it will feel like within a fortnight of hanging it.
Colour count is the next tell. Confident abstracts usually commit to two or three colour families and let tone do the talking; weak ones hedge with six or seven. This matters practically as well as aesthetically, because a disciplined palette is far easier to place in a real room.
Choosing for a space works best backwards: pick the two colours your room already repeats, then find an abstract built on them, ideally with one colour you do not own as the spark. Matching every hue exactly produces the show-home effect, which is technically correct and instantly forgettable.
Scale changes meaning in abstraction more than in any other category. Gestural, loose pieces want to be big — the sweep of the mark is the content, and shrinking it kills the energy. Tight geometric or small-pattern abstraction survives modest sizes much better. If your wall only fits a smaller canvas, choose composition over gesture.
Placement is the most forgiving part: abstracts carry no subject to clash with a room's purpose, which is why they work above sofas, beds and desks alike, and why they are the usual answer for awkward spots like stair walls.
Before you commit, run the fortnight test in miniature: set the image as your phone background for a day or two. Anything that still interests you after fifty accidental viewings will survive years on a wall.
