Matching it is simple enough: pick one colour that already exists in the space — a cushion, a rug stripe, a vase — and let the artwork's accent repeat it. The dominant background can then be a soft neutral that touches nothing else, and the piece will still look chosen for the room, because in a real sense it was.

Pattern density is the next thing to judge. Dense, repeating pattern behaves like fabric on the wall and competes with every other pattern in sight, so count what the room already holds. A patterned rug plus patterned curtains means you want shape art with generous empty space; sparse compositions with a few large forms sit peacefully in busy rooms, while busy compositions need calm ones.

Scale runs against instinct here. Small repeating motifs need a large canvas to read as intentional rather than accidental, while a single big shape can hold its own at modest sizes. If you are hanging a pair, keep the pattern scale consistent between the two and vary the colour instead; mismatched densities side by side rarely settle.

A last check before buying: cover the accent colour with your thumb on the screen and see what remains. If the piece goes dead without it, be certain that accent genuinely suits your room, because it is the part of the artwork you will actually be living with.
