Magnolia and beige walls carry a yellow that turns neutral greys visibly green and drags the reds towards brick. The same piece hung on cool grey, deep navy or near black paint gains depth immediately, because the wall stops competing with the picture for the low end of the tonal range. White walls are the safe middle. They flatten nothing, but they do expose the edges of a dark image, so the picture reads as a distinct dark rectangle rather than as a window. That is not a problem if you like the graphic look of it, and it is worth knowing in advance rather than discovering it after hanging. The genre itself is grim, kinetic and heavily shadowed: armoured figures, ruined architecture, creatures rendered in unsettling detail, action drawn with hard diagonals. It is decoration with a mood, and the mood is dread. That places it well in a bedroom or a games room and badly in a kitchen, where the light is bright and the tone is wrong. The accent colour is the thing to check. Most compositions carry one hot note in an otherwise muted field, and that note is usually a red. If your room already has a strong red or orange in it, the two will fight, and the picture will lose because it has less area to fight with. Do this before buying: hold your phone with the image on screen flat against the wall in daylight. If the greys in the picture look brown or muddy next to your paint, either choose a piece with a genuine black anchoring it, or accept that the wall needs repainting first.
